OMAM Chapter Two

Describe the atmosphere of the ranch and bunkhouse. Be sure to include characteristics of different characters that were formally of informally introduced to us in this chapter. Support your choice with textual evidence and interpretation.

The atmosphere of the ranch and bunkhouse wasn’t the best. It was dirty and filthy. It wasn’t the safest, but probably the best for Lennie and George. When Lennie and George first come to the ranch,  they meet a few new people. The pair meet a small man, but a big ego. His name is Curley. Curley is a man who likes to cause trouble with others. They also meet Curley's wife. Curley's wife's has no name. She likes to flirt around other guys, especially Slim. Slim is a nice guy. He doesn’t start trouble, nor has problems with anyone.

Why doesn’t Curley's wife have a name? What message, if anything, is John Steinbeck trying to send by not giving her a name? Support your choice with textual evidence and interpretation.

I think Curley's wife doesn’t have a name because they use her almost like a prostitute. The mistreat her so much, I don’t think the ever bother to find out her name. Curley's wife likes to hang around with they guys, especially Slim. She is very flirtatious. An example of how they mistreat her is when Slim is asked how his “bitch” is. The people on the ranch show no respect towards her, and practically ignore the fact that she is Curley's wife.

What are your overall impressions of Of Mice And Men thus far? Support your choice with a proper explanation.

I think this is one of the best books I’ve ever read. It is very descriptive and interesting. The book has a lot of foreshadowing which makes it more interesting. It allows me to anticipate the next part. There are many heart-warming parts such as when Lennie defends and sticks by George no matter if George is mean to him or not. Finally, the book gives information about a topic I never learned about; migrant workers. Since George and Lennie are migrant workers, you get to see an inside look on their lives and what migrant workers are.
